One of Trastevere's most beloved traditions, the Festa de' Noantri begins on the first Saturday after the feast of the Virgin Mary. At the heart of the celebration is the Madonna Fiumarola, a wooden statue of the Blessed Virgin discovered by fishermen at the mouth of the Tiber in the early 16th century. On July 16, the statue is carried through the streets of Trastevere in a grand procession, with festivities, performances and food stalls filling the neighborhood. Later in the festival, the Madonna makes a symbolic return along the river in a beautiful procession accompanied by fireworks.
