August may be a quieter month in Rome, but there's still plenty to enjoy. The spectacular re-creation of the miraculous snowfall at Santa Maria Maggiore lights up the city early in the month, and Ferragosto brings lively celebrations marking the height of summer. It's also the perfect time to take advantage of the end-of-summer sales and explore Rome at a more relaxed pace.

The Festa della Madonna della Neve, or the Feast of Our Lady of the Snows, celebrates the legend of a miraculous summer snowfall marking the spot where the Basilica di Santa Maria Maggiore now stands. Each year, special masses are held in the basilica, with white flower petals showering down to symbolize the snowfall. In the evening, the square in front of the church comes alive with music, a light show and swirling soap bubbles that recreate the magic of snow in the heart of summer - a beautiful tradition not to be missed.

Ferragosto is one of Italy's most beloved holidays, with roots dating back to the time of Emperor Augustus. Originally a day of rest for agricultural workers, it has become a national celebration marking the height of summer. Before Romans head to the coast or mountains for their holidays, the Gran Ballo di Ferragosto transforms piazzas across the city into lively dance floors. Professional dancers perform in some squares, but everyone is invited to join in the fun, with fireworks lighting up the night sky to close the celebrations.
