The Florentines celebrate the rebirth of Christ with a passionate flair for fireworks and theatrics. With origins dating back to the Crusades, the ceremony of Scoppio del Carro is the symbolic celebration of the rebirth of Christ. Beginning at 10am, an elaborately decorated cart holding the symbolic holy fire, a chest of coals ignited by a priest, is pulled by two white oxen through the city to the Piazza del Duomo. In front of the cathedral, the archbishop lights a rocket shaped like a white dove—the "colombina"—which travels along a wire into the cart, igniting an incredible display of fireworks. The success of the explosion is said to bring good fortune for the coming year, and the event is one of Florence's most colorful and surprising traditions.
