antiques, silk upholstery and room to enjoy this elegant apartment
in the heart of Rome.
Location
Via dei Greci is one of the many interesting streets in the Spanish
Steps area of Rome. Closed to traffic, it houses Saint Anastasious
Greek Catholic church and college, the world-famous national
academy of music of Santa Cecilia, and the spot where
English-speaking ex-patriots meet, the Lion Bookshop. It is a two
minute walk to the very central Spanish Steps piazza.
Building
Five or six buildings that date from the 1600s surround a large, quiet courtyard. You'll come and go through the small door in the carriage gate, but no carriages these days. In fact, no cars or motorcycles in the courtyard, either, just tenants that include a custom violin maker's shop. Peek in the window to see his wares.
The courtyard has plantings and many apartment balconies have flowers. It is a quiet oasis in a busy city.
The apartment is on the fourth floor (third, European designation). There is an elevator all the way. There are four or five steps to negotiate as you make your way from street level, across the courtyard and to the elevator.
This apartment is in the same building as the Spagna apartment, so, between them, a group of nine is accommodated.
Interior Description
From the spacious foyer you enter the dining room and then the
light-filled living room that has three large windows. The living
room has a sofa, two love seats and two unusual sleigh-type chairs
as well as a number of large antiques and attractive paintings. The
room is large, about 350 square feet.
The dining room is also spacious with side boards and French doors that open onto an internal balcony that is shared with the kitchen.
The kitchen is all new with white cabinetry, all appliances including a large refrigerator/freezer and a breakfast bar.
At the end of the entry hall is the twin bedroom with a window onto Via dei Greci. The room is large and comfortable and has a pretty antique secretary as well as a bureau. Next comes a bathroom and then four steps up to the master bedroom level. The master bath is accessed off the corridor.
The bedroom, with a king size bed, is old-fashioned with a beautiful brass bedstead and lace coverlet. The color theme is green. You'll find some nice antique pieces here. The master bedroom overlooks Via dei Greci as well, and has French doors onto a private balcony. Across the street is the Academy of Santa Cecilia, Italy's national music academy and you may occasionally hear the strains of the master's level music students practicing.
This apartment is very close to the Spagna apartment, so, between them, a group of seven is accommodated.
We have inspected in this apartment. Our opinion:
• The apartment is lovely, large and welcoming.
• The location is terrific, right near the Spanish Steps but on a quiet side-street.
• Via dei Greci is a quiet, pedestrian-only street, except for taxis, local deliveries and motorini (motor scooters) that seem to buzz around with impunity.
• The master bedroom and small bedroom windows open onto the interior courtyard, quiet.
